Except for you saying it turns into a homerun derby, there are homerun limits at every tournament partner. Learn to hit without them takes more skill then just swinging to hit a ball 20 ft... just saying.

And hitting a ball that's thrown 25+ feet in the air takes quite a bit of skill as well.
Go down to Waunafest and let me know how you fair.

no one in the COUNTRY plays throwing it 25 ft...so its cool that you can do it and get drunk. softball of 2000's is flat and has a home run limit.

Yes, yes it does.
Also, who said anything about getting drunk. Just because YOU can't effectively play highball doesn't make it any less skillful.
Notice how I made an assumption that you can't play highball like you did about me getting drunk while I play. Both have no basis because we don't know each other, but I'm willing to bet mine is more factual.
Highball has gone the way of the dodo because people like you bitched that "it's too hard to hit" and "the game isn't offensive enough". Just because you can't appreciate the skill it takes to play highball, don't marginalized those that do.

A lot of good points. I had hoped that a tournament director could take a look here at what players want and tweak the format to their liking as the differences, while heated, aren't really that big of a deal when putting something together that people want to play.
Tournaments with the most teams playing in them are the result of giving players what they want.
The thinking behind the calling of flat and high after the ball hits the ground is that it allows for the umpire to take in the full measure of the pitch before he makes his call. It makes the umpires job Much easier. And really? They are throwing underhand so get up there and swing the bat. Quit sitting up there with your dime strike zone hoping they throw you a glory ball.
The 6-12 arc limit has been the standard for years and continues to be played in the majority of tournaments that I've played in this year. Will things eventually go to 6-10 as the majority? Who knows? I don't really care because I never met a pitch I didn't like.
Also I agree, you wouldn't want to bracket a tournament with less than 16 teams. Double elimination with less than 16 teams, with a toilet bowl bracket for teams that have a bad go of it or are looking to play in order to get better, would be best. 2 & Q makes teams not want to play. Over 16 teams bracket it after 2 games and double elim after that.
And I forgot these:
10.) Beer Drinking Trophy 11.) Eating Trophy 12.) Give the losing teams a pitcher of beer for each game lost redeemable at the nearest bar.

The main arguement against unlimited is one player can dominate the game (great pitcher) Much like in fastpitch. That is the main reason unlimited died out. And yes i am old enough to have played around Milwaukee when the leagues were almost all unlimited.

Highball as you glamorously call it has gone dodo because its not softball...its a carnival event. Hence the getting drunk...and I could hit it just fine, i do well with the milwaukee 18 footers, I choose to NOT play it as it offers nothing for me. And i think players resmondo and team usa have plenty of skill and I appreciate trying to emulate that and not hitting 25 ft pitches. (emphasis on trying)

1.) 100% Payout (Rather have 60-80% payout with 2 paid umps per game) 2.) Arc 6-12 called high or flat after it hits the ground (6-10' height called in the air) 3.) 2-1 count plate and mat with a foul ball allowed but no dummy swing (I like the 1 foul ball) 4.) Hit your own 44/.375 ball (Hit your own ball is good. Make it where they have to buy them from you. ) 5.) Bracketed after 2 games and double elimination after that. (3 Game guarentee I like better. Some teams loose games they should not have lost. Give them a chance to get back in it and it's run like a double elim) 6.) 2 HR's per inning(Great rule) 7.) 15 run rule after 5 (would add 20 after 4 and 25 after 3) 8.) ASA bats (yes because not that many teams play anything else around here)
PS. Not Unlimited Arch (High ball) like Seth said why would we make a tournament for 3% of the players? If your so good it come play limited arc and dominate because it's so much easier to play.

2 Major differences between flat pitch and no limit . . .
1)THE BIG MEATHEADS dont hit the ball as f'n hard! That is why in the last 5 years the bats and balls have been constently changing. They bring the arc down so all the juice heads can hit lazer beams and people are starting to get hurt more often (and teams are still freezing and recovering balls and shaving bats!) and then all of a sudden the balls and bats are all getting new regulations put on them??
2) The umpire doesn't factor into the game as much. All he/she has to do is watch to see if the ball hits the mat.
Im not saying either way is better. Im just not a HR hitter and I play infield (most often 3rd base), so given the choice I would rather play high ball. Im not saying any of you have to . . I just think when asa went to 10' feet it was just plain stupid! Why not use a T to hit of?
Anyway, all I have to say is that more than 3% of the softball players in Wisconsin play unlimited arc. They had more teams in Waunafest then B,C,&D State tournaments combined this year . . . by far!
And Yes, Melvina had more teams at it then state. And two of them were teams the director of the tournament pissed off to the point they wont go back ever again.

Oh people juice bats, and are on steroids and blah blah...I'm 5'10 210lb fat kid who can smash it just as hard and have no shaved bats and not a ounce of muscle.
